From the rugged grounds of Kerala, a set of volleyball players have flown to the Indoor stadium in Qatar to participate in the volleyball league organised by Qatar Volleyball Association and VoliQ (Volleyball Loving Indians in Qatar).

The third edition of the tournament, which will be organised from March 6 to 10, is a yearly competition and almost all of the Kerala team and national team players have flown to take part in the league. The teams taking part in the competition are Incas, Sanskriti, KMCC, Ali International and FAS Kuttiady.

Former Indian caption Cyril C. Valloor, who won the bronze medal in the 1986 Asian Games, will be one of the guests of the organisers. The league will be held in two groups and the best two teams will play in the final on March 10. 45 players from India are taking part in the tournament.

“The tournament is organised by a set of volleyball lovers in Qatar. They have been conducting the tournament for a few years. The league is a hit among expatriates, who have a passion for volleyball. There is also a team called FAS Kuttiady featuring the local players from Kuttiady region, who have reached international level in the game,” says Kishore, a former Indian player form Kozhikode.

“Until last year, I was a part of the tournament but this time I was not able to go for the tournament due to some personal reasons. The tournament gives great exposure for the players form Kerala in foreign countries,” he adds, “Several tournaments are happening in and around Kerala this season. I have been busy playing in them. Volleyball is really getting a boost in the state,” he said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
