VK Malhotra stays AAI chief
Vijay Kumar Malhotra Friday was re-elected as president of the Archery Association of India (AAI) for the 40th year in a row.
Malhotra, 80, who has been getting elected un-opposed since 1973, for the first time faced opposition from B.V.P. Rao, a former IAS officer and UN official and now Clean Sports India convener, and defeated him.
The thrice-postponed election turned controversial because the AAI conducted it defying the National Sports Development Code which has specified age, tenure of office. The term of office is restricted to two terms of four years each and and the age fixed for an office-bearer is 70.
However, a majority of national sports federations are opposed to the government guidelines.
