Tough competition and highly humid conditions did not deter city shooter Kynan Chenai as he clinched a gold medal at the recently held Thailand Open shooting championships in Bangkok.

The 19-year-old showcased his mettle in the final round when he was tied at 121 points out of 150. The Hyderabadi wriggled out of it with a perfect shot that fetched him a rightly-deserved gold. “There were about 50 shooters who participated at the event. The shooting range in Thailand was tough and the ridiculous humid conditions made it even more tougher. The final round was exciting as I managed to hit the mark in the tie-breaker while my opponent couldn’t,” Kynan said.

On the confidence he gained from winning the medal, Kynan said, “It is always important to put up a good show in any tournament and I am happy to won. Winning gives you the motivation to perform better and give your best shot.”

On not making to the Commonwealth Games squad, Kynan said, “I was a little disappointed for not making it to the team. But, the shooters who made the final cut are experienced ones and I think the country made the right choice.”

On the medal prospects of the Indian team at the Games, Kynan said, “We have some phenomenal shooters in the fray and I am sure we will bag a rich haul of medals. The trick will be to get off to a good start and once that’s done, it should be a smooth sailing for us. Having said, that the competition will be extremely tough but India did extremely well in the 2006 edition of CWG in Melbourne. The expectations will be high and I am sure our shooters will deliver it.”
Kynan will leave for Kazakhstan in two weeks to take part in a shooting grand prix. “The win in Thailand will stand me in good stead for that event,” he said. On the target set for the coming months, Kynan said, “I would want to get into the Indian team and shoot in a few tournaments as that will help me to get experience at the highest level.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
