Mount Carmel School in Kottayam was made famous by the sublimely talented Geethu Anna Jose when she emerged through inter-school competitions to become one of the best in the country.

Even after Geethu left to become the princess of Indian basketball, the school has continuously produced several gifted players, the next best being Poojamol K.S.

This month, the two talented girls produced by Carmel will be representing the nation in different categories in major international events.

Geethu, indispensable member of the senior team will be the centre of attraction in the William Jones Cup invitation tournament in Taiwan starting this Saturday.

While, Poojamol is part of the Indian contingent taking part in the Children of Asia International Games, which began on Wednesday and will go on till July 16 in Russia.

It comes as no surprise that there are many more players from Mount Carmel following the footsteps of their seniors, but one person who has been associated with all this success is Coach Biju Themman.

For the last 22 years, Biju has been finding talents at the school and he attributes the success to the hardwork of the girls who derive inspirations from their predecessors.

With more players such as Ashy Mathew, Shija Joseph, Victoria P. Mathew and Anu K.S. showing great promise, the schools’ success saga is certain to continue in the years to come.

In the tournament in Russia, Poojamol is accompanied by fellow Malayali Elizabeth Hilarios from Kozhikode and Shruthi Praveen Menon, Keralite representing Maharashtra.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
