Sindhu needs to step it up, says Vimal
Former national badminton coach U. Vimal Kumar lavished praise on rising star P.V. Sindhu for the historic feat at the world championship, but felt that she was done in by Prakash Padukone style of deceptive game displayed by Thai wonderkid Ratchanok Intanon in their women’s singles semi-final in Guangzhou, China.
Sindhu became the first Indian woman to clinch a medal at the prestigious event, and third overall following the bronze medals claimed by Padukone at the 1983 Copenhagen Worlds, and Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa’s efforts in 2011.
“Sindhu could not cope up with the deceptive strokes of Ratchanok, which totally unsettled the Indian in the semi-final.
“The Thai girl reminds me of Prakash, who mesmersied attacking Chinese players with his deceptive strokes and tricky net shots in 1980s and early 1990s,” Vimal was quoted as saying.
“It was really fascinating to watch Ratchanok the way she was stroking the shuttle and making Sindhu work.
“Sindhu is okay with the fast-paced and attacking game of the Chinese. If Sindhu wants to succeed against Ratchanok, she needs to cope with the Thai girl’s tricky and deceptive style of play,” he added.
The former national championships winner said that Sindhu needed to add some tricks into her kitty to stop Ratchanok from dominating her because the Thai will be one of the main rivals in future international events.
“But Sindhu has many years ahead of her and in the next 10 years she could be playing on the top,” he said.
