Kerala Police volleyball team have received a boost to its squad after the state government has approved the appointment order of former India international M.T. Azeez.
Though he was temporarily part of a couple of department teams for the past couple of years, the deal would see a permanent role as a team player in the fixtures of the cops in the coming season.
“It will be a good move for my career. I have played for them in a temporary basis in some tournaments and after my stint at a volleyball club in Ras al-khaimah in the UAE, this would give a fresh start to my career,” says Azeez.
“Though I was trying to play in the Middle East again, a departmental job would give me more exposure in my homeland.
After playing for India in the Olympic qualifiers in Germany, I thought I could settle down in Kerala rather than playing for foreign clubs,” he says.
“The addition of Azeez would be a real boost to the squad. With him, the squad will have a good mix of young and experienced players.
He will be the senior most player in the squad. We have to tune the team to its best before the major competition, All India Police Games scheduled to be held in Himachal Pradesh next year,” says T.V. Sumithrov, head coach of Kerala Police team.
“At present, the team is on a par with the best departmental teams in the state. His inclusion will only better the squad,” said the coach.
“We expected his inclusion in July itself. But there were some procedural delays. This would mark a new era for Kerala police volleyball team.
The team is set completely and will soon be ready to replicate the success it had last season when we won three all-India titles and six all-Kerala tournaments,” says assistant coach Yasar Arafath. The team is currently practising at Chandrasekharan Nair stadium, Thiruvananthapuram.
