Shiv Kapur clinches Open berth

After a gap of six years, India’s pro-golfer Shiv Kapur will make his reentry at the coveted British Open.
The Delhiite, who made his Major debut in 2006, where he missed the cut, earned his berth for the 2013 Open Championship at the 36-hole Local Final Qualifying event in Dunbar, Scotland on Tuesday.
The 31-year-old Kapur fired scores of 69 and 64 in wet and cold conditions for a two-day total of sevenunder-133. He finished tied second to become one of three players in the field to make the cut.
Kapur, a former winner on the Asian Tour, said, “I wanted to try and qualify on a links course because I think that’s the proper way to do it. It was the first time I had played a links course since this time last year, so it was all a bit strange to start with, but I soon got the hang of things again.” He will rely on Italian Golf Federation coach, Alberto Binaghi, who also works with Italian sensation Matteo Manassero, to guide him to a successful campaign at The Open which will be played at Muirfield from July 18 to 21.
“I’ve been working with Alberto for the last few months. We had a session in Milan earlier this week and we worked mainly on my short game and hitting shots in the wind. I think that helped a lot,” said Kapur in a statement.
