The first ever Indian Badminton League is almost ready to announce its champion. With the final match to be played today, let us take a look at the matches to watch out for.
The last time the two teams faced each other, Hotshots emerged victorious 3-2 and Warriors will be more than willing to remind Hyderabad of their formidable force.
Sindhu takes on Saina
In the final encounter, the most anticipated match is the one where the heavyweights — Saina Nehwal and P. V. Sindhu — go head-to-head. Nehwal has defeated Sindhu earlier but Sindhu is no push over. Her World Championship bronze is proof of that. Sindhu would be going into the match to set the record straight and remind everyone exactly how she went about to claim her medal.
However, Saina is one of the world’s best female badminton players and her skills and talent is proven time and again with countless wins on national and international events. The organisers couldn’t have asked for a more exciting way to end the first season of IBL. Both players will be going into their singles match with all guns blazing and when the dust settles, we can finally find out who is better—Saina or Sindhu.
Its David vs Goliath as Goh/Lim goes head to head with formidable Kid/Boe
Another match to watch out for is the men’s doubles. While in women’s singles, Sindhu is going into her match looking like the underdog, when it comes to the doubles, it is Hyderabad’s turn to play underdog. The V Shem Goh and Kim Wah Lim pair is not by any measure a weak duo. However, in comparison to their opponents, formidable Kido/Boe, they look like David against Goliath. Whether they, like David, can manage to defeat their Goliath is yet to be seen but Kido/Boe is not going to make it easy for them.
Hyderabad Hotshots are at a disadvantage in the mixed doubles match too. Hotshots’ Goh/Gadre duo don’t even compare to Warriors’ legendary duo—Kido/Pia. If Hotshots, like in their previous game, field Saina instead of Gadre, Hotshots have a slightly improved chance at winning.
Tanongsak and Ajay looks to dominate singles
Srikanth’s match is another match that is bound to be eventful. The promising young player has surprised many with his skills and has given even the best players of the tournament a run for the money. Going into the final match, he will be looking to yet again prove his worth, ending the tournament on a high. Gurusai has been performing well below expectations and was lacklustre almost throughout the tournament. With Hyderabad sending out Tanongsak and Ajay Jayaram to face Srikanth and Gurusai, it won’t be surprising if Hotshots emerges victorious in these two encounters.
Since the men’s singles matches go in the favour of Hyderabad and the doubles’ matches go in the favour of Awadhe, it may, at the end of it all, come down to Saina and Sindhu. Whoever wins the match may win their team the championship.
