Olympic dreams for Sujith Kuttan
Sprint prodigy Sujith Kuttan has outrun many champion athletes in his athletic career. And the impressive teenager is off to spring more surprises as he stands a chance of making it to London for the Olympics.
Mercy Kuttan, former Olympic runner and mother of Sujith confirmed that she has received a call from the Athletics Federation of India asking the wonder boy to be sent for the Indian 100 m relay team’s core camp ahead of the London qualification.
“As it is the core camp there should be a six or seven athletes taking part and the team will be decided later, but Sujith will go for it. He has set a few good timings this season both in indoor and outdoor meets,” said Mercy.
The 19-year-old had clocked 10.5 seconds in the inter-university meet and later struck gold in an indoor meet at Bangalore. Sujith would jokingly remark that he is ready for the Olympics before he sprinted down the Maharaja’s College synthetic tracks on evenings, training under the watchful eyes of his mother Mercy.
Meanwhile, sources in AFI said that the qualification date is July 2 and before the athletes are finalised the Indian team has to come up in the top 16 in the world. “Best two timings of each team will be taken for qualification, but the team members will be decided only by the federation,” source said.
Chances are that the core camp will be held at NIS Patiala. The national men’s 100 m relay team had won bronze in the Delhi commonwealth games. That team comprised of Rahamatulla Molla, Suresh Sathya, Shameer Manzile and Mohammed Abdul Najeeb Qureshi.
