Love, the true reward for Joseph
Tom Joseph was busy attending a reception organised by volleyball lovers in Malappuram on Saturday when the news broke out that Renjith Maheswary's Arjuna Award was put on hold. Six hours later, Tom had to be in Angamaly for another reception, also organised by volleyball fans.
Even after all the humiliation that Tom Joseph had to put up with over the Arjuna Award fiasco, the player seems happier than ever and the reason behind it is the unconditional love being showered on him by the volleyball lovers across the state.
“I would not have received this much love from the public, if I had received Arjuna Award. Now, every day I receive at least two enquiries from various associations to organise receptions for me. I stopped counting after 20,“ says Tom.
“The response from the media and common people was also astonishing after the govern ment denied me the award. I feel no regret for not getting the award now. If I had received the award, there would not have been such an outpouring of love,“ he points out.
The volleyball player has not shunned any request put forward by his fans. He has been attending the functions organised across the state. “Wherever the function is, I am ready to go. This is the only way to respect their love. However, I am not missing any practice sessions at BPCL,“ he says.
Kerala Volleyball Association, in an unprecedented move, has decided to honour him next month. “We are trying to gift him more than Rs ! lakh in the function. We hope we can collect about Rs 2 lakh by that time. This is to protest the government's decision to reject the nomination for a record ninth time,“ says Nalakath Basheer, the association secretary.
It would be the first time in the history of the association that a state player is being honoured. Another major reception is by the volleyball lovers in Triprayar in Thrissur. “Wherever Tom is going, people are recognizing him. He has become a real star,“ says Basheer.MINI ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPKozhikode Athletic Association has published the championship calendar for the season 2013-14.
