India Olympic boss Suresh Kalmadi retiring, ex-athletes happy
Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi says he will not run for re-election next month, after pressure from the government, the IOC, and a group of former athletes.
The controversial Kalmadi confirmed what he indicated last week, that he will not contest the IOA elections after 16 years at the helm.
The International Olympic Committee told the IOA recently that Kalmadi and two other officials linked to the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games corruption scandal should not be allowed to contest the elections on Nov. 25.
Independent body Clean Sports India's vice-president, Ashwini Nachappa, welcomed the move and says its efforts against Kalmadi and other administrators "has been justified."
