Gaurav Gill returns to racing, grabs pole
Chennai: Gaurav Gill announced his return to circuit racing on Saturday with a sizzling drive to clinch pole position in the Indian Touring Car category of the third round of the MMSC-FMSCI National Racing Championship.
Representing Team Big Foots, the Delhi ace -who is in contention for the 2013 Asia Pacific Rally Championship crown -needed little time to get used to the Esteem car as he clocked 1:54.341 around the 3.7km circuit on his very first hot lap. Gill's fastest time was 1.6sec adrift off his teammate N. Leelakrishnan.
Championship leader Arjun Balu of Tiger Sports India had to be content with the third spot on the starting grid.
Arjun, whose best lap was almost three seconds off the pace, has a tough challenge ahead with two Big Foots machines in front.
Trichur boy S. Diljith and Coimbatore's Arjun Narendran shared the honours in the Toyota Etios single-make series by winnings a race each.
Japan's Yudai Jinkawa dominated the incident-filled MRF Formula 1600 class. In the 12 lap race that was marred by two safety care periods, polesitter Jinkawa held off Chennai's Ashwin Sundar.
Fifteen-year-old Tarun Reddy completed the top three. It was Tarun's second podium finish this season.
