Easy for India Cements

A fine all-round effort from Chennai-based India Cements helped them win the recently concluded Dr.D.Y.Patil all-India T20 tournament.

The triumph should hardly come as a surprise as many of the players who made the win possible have already craved a niche for themselves in the shortest format.

The eighth edition of the highly competitive national tournament held at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai saw the participation of power packed sides such as Air India, IOC, Tatas, Reliance One, ONGC, BPCL, Western Railway, MRF, SBT, SBH and DY Patil A & B.

India Cements registered an easy win over the hosts in the final. Indian stars Dinesh Karthik and Hemang Badani guided the chase of 156 with aplomb.

“The atmosphere under lights was fantastic. The turnout was amazing as well. It was not the easiest of targets but we managed to get things under control. Playing a few tough games at the league stage helped the team mould better,” said Dinesh Karthik who scored an unbeaten 46 in the final.

Hemang Badani richly deserved his man of the series award. Having performed adequately with the bat and ball, Hemang was the right choice for the award. “Nothing is more satisfying than contributing to the success of the side.

The team spirit was excellent and the competition was of a very high standard. Some of the best talents in this format participated and this win should rank as one of the happier moments of my career,” said the left-hander.

The likes of Sreekumar Nair, former TN Ranji skipper, S. Suresh and R. Prasanna also played their parts. “Everyone played their part to perfection. We did not enjoy the best of starts but ultimately finished the way we wanted to. P. Amarnath bowled well and Arun Karthik’s fielding was a major asset. It was a privilege to lead this team and the victory means a lot to us,” said skipper S. Suresh Kumar.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
