Thirteen-year-old Diptayan Ghosh upset third seed Grand Master Oliver Barbosa in the third round of the 4th Chennai Open GM Chess Tournament on Thursday.
The Kolkata boy playing black forced the GM to resign after 34 moves.
He has 3 points from as many games. Another surprising result was Navin Kanna T. U. holding second seed Ukranian GM Kravtsic Martyn to a draw.
Local boy Navin split points with the GM after 32 moves meanwhile, for top seed GM Aleksandrov Aleksej from Belarus it was a comfortable victory against Swayams Mishra.
Kerala boy S. L. Narayanan beat Tamil Nadu’s Vaisakh N. before drawing with Sumit Grover of Jammu and Kashmir in the second round. Narayanan has 2.5 points from a possible 3.
Railways’ Malayali player International Master K. Rathnakaran was held to a draw by Candidate Master Prince Bajaj in their third round tie. Rathnakaran has 2.5 points.
Two of the five Indian GMs in the championship such as Sethuraman S. P. and Neelotpal Das had victories in the third round while the others had drawn matches.
GM Deepan Chakkravarthy J. was held by Tamil Nadu’s FIDE Master Rajesh V. A. V. while GM Dibyendu Barua was held to a draw by Andhra Pradesh player Ravi Teja S.
GM R. R. Laxman has had a tough start to the event with two draws, both against lower ranked players. Laxman was held by Tamil Nadu boy Niranjan Navalgund and before that by Maharashtra’s Atul Dahale.
GM Aleksej will play Hungarian GM Hoang Thanh Trang while Diptayan’s next encounter is with Neelotpal and Narayanan will be up against GM Paragua Mark of Philippines in the fourth round to be played on Friday.
