Clijsters in final despite accident
Doha, Oct. 30: US Open champion Kim Clijsters reached the final of the WTA Championships here on Saturday despite being involved in a “scary” car crash on the way to the Khalifa Stadium.
Clijsters scored an ultimately impressive 7-6 (7/3), 6-1 win over Australia’s Samantha Stosur, though she slipped to an early 0-3 deficit after her courtesy car was struck heavily en route between her hotel and the venue. The vehicle was abandoned by the side of the highway, and a replacement quickly summoned and although Clijsters was said to be okay she was conspicuously slow in getting into her stride.
“We just had a car accident on our way to the courts! So scary......Bob (Verbeeck), my manager took the hit,” Clijsters said on Twitter. “We are all okay....Just the car is ready for the junk yard.”
Clijsters seemed ready for her fight-back after 20 minutes of the match when she carved out a break point with a topspin backhand down the line which combined great pace with magnetic accuracy.
