Chowrasia, Gaurav to swing it for Chennai
Arjuna awardee Gaurav Ghei and two-time European Tour winner Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia are the star attractions in the Chennai team for the inaugural Louis Philippe Cup golf series, modeled after the successful Indian Premier League.
The biggest domestic event with a prize pursue of `1.2 crores will have nine city-based franchisees and Chennai will be owned by Take Solutions Ltd, leaders in Life Sciences and supply chain management products. The inaugural edition begins at the Karnataka Golf Association from March 5.
With India's top 18 golfers representing nine cities -- Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkota, Lucknow, Delhi, Gurgaon, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh -- the Louis Philippe Cup is expected to be an enthralling tournament for the golf enthusiasts.
Gaurav is excited to represent Chennai which he says is close to his heart. “I have a long affiliation with the city. I am good friends with the members of the Tamil Nadu Golf Federation-Cosmo club.
Many of my Indian pro victories have come in Chennai and I do make regular visits personal and corporate relationships.
Having Chowrasia on the team certainly boosts our chances and with Anura Rohana, strong third member, we definitely can go in with a chance to win. I will be delighted to play for Chennai and will try to ensure we get a strong team to take on the powerhouses of Delhi, Gurgaon and other teams,” added Delhi-based Gaurav.
Gaurav is supported by Kolkata's Chowrasia of Kolkata who last week finished 24th at the Volvo Golf Champions.
Winner of The Global Green Bangalore Open 2011, Srilankan golfer Anura Rohana finished 17th on the Rolex Rankings last term and is the third player in the Take Chennai team.
Three amateurs will be selected through a series of club qualifying rounds at TNGF-Cosmo, Coimbatore Golf Club and Madras Gymkhana. Each club will hold day-long event and winner, with 15 handicap or better will also be picked for the Chennai team.
HR Srinivasan, vice chairman of Take Solutions, said: “We were delighted to support the Chennai team as it's our base and we have a strong network of investors and associates in the city who follow golf and we hope they support the team.”
PGTI director Padamjit Sandhu said, “Chennai has an active base of very passionate golf players at the various clubs. The team should pick one veteran player to inspire and lead younger team members to put up a good show,” he said.
