Chhetri named among probables
Ace striker Sunil Chhetri has been named among the probables for the forthcoming Nehru Cup, that kicks off at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here from August 22.
The list of 27 probables was picked by newly-appointed national coach Wim Koevermans, who has been in charge of the ongoing preparatory Camp at the KSFA Stadium in Bengaluru from August 3.
However among the probables, only Chhetri hasn’t joined the camp as yet.
Recent reports in the media had suggested that Chhetri might have been dropped as he would not be able to join the camp in time.
But Koevermans said, “I’m happy that we got confirmation from his club of his release on August 12 and that leaves us get enough time to work with him to prepare ourselves for the Nehru Cup.”
Meanwhile, the All India Football Federation has received written assurances from Chhetri that Chhetri will be joining the camp on August 12. The Delhi lad is presently playing for the Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon.
India will look to wrap up a hat-trick of Nehru Cups after having won the 2007 and 2009 editions of the tournament.
