Chanu named skipper
Defender Sushila Chanu will lead an 18-member Indian team in the FIH Junior Women’s World Cup at Monchengladbach, Germany, that begins July 27.
Forward Rani was named the vice-captain of the team, that was picked on the the basis of their performance during the recent Scotland tour, senior women team’s Europe tour, the FIH World League Round 3 in Rotterdam and fitness in preparatory camps, Hockey India said.
India, who are placed in Pool C along with New Zealand, Australia and Russia, will face the Aussies in their opening game on July 27. This will be followed by matches against New Zealand and Russia on July 28 and July 30, respectively.
The squad are currently undergoing a preparatory camp at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala. The team will leave for Germany on July 15 and will play four warm-up games ahead of their World Cup campaign.
India will play their first warm-up game against Belgium on July 17 followed by matches against Holland (July 19), South Africa (July 21 and July 24).
