Australia, US, UK issue travel advisories ahead of CWG

Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and the United States have all issued travel advisories for their citizens who are planning to visit India, and specifically New Delhi during the duration of the XIXth Commonwealth Games''.

The travel advisories have been issued after Sunday’s attack on two Taiwanese citizens outside a mosque in the Walled City of Delhi. Both citizens were injured in the attack and are presently in hospital. One of the injured is stated to be in critical condition.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) on Monday said there is now a "high risk of a terrorist attack" in New Delhi, as it prepares for the Commonwealth Games in two weeks'' time.

DFAT said Australians should pay close attention to their personal security at all times. According to ABC News, the authors of a security risk assessment said there is an 80 per cent chance the Games will come under some form of attack from terrorists.

The family of Australian swimmer Nick D’Arcy will travel to Delhi for next month’s Games despite the security fears. Nick D’Arcy’s mother, Sue said she is prepared to put her trust in Australian and Indian authorities.

"We’ve got every faith in the Indian government and Australian Swimming and the Australian Federal Police and we will be careful, " Sue told ABC News on Monday.
"We will do everything that’s directed to us, that’s the best we can hope for really," Sue added.

Meanwhile, the UK and the US have also issued travel advisories to citizens. Both countries have urged citizens to maintain a ''low profile'' and have warned against visiting religious places. The travel advisory comes post the Jama Masjid firing that took place on Sunday, where two Taiwanese tourists barely escaped with gun shot wounds.

The United States has issued a travel advisory to its citizens, asking them to be cautious and maintain a low profile. "US citizens are urged to always practice good security, maintain a heightened situational awareness and a low profile. US citizens are advised to monitor local news reports and consider the level of security while visiting public places, including religious sites," the advisory issued by the US embassy in Delhi said.

The US continues to develop information on potential security threats to its citizens overseas and shares credible threat information through Consular Information Program documents such as Travel Warnings and Travel Alerts as well as Country Information, it read.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
