Wrestler-actor Dara Singh dies at 83
Veteran wrestler-turned-actor and politician Dara Singh passed away at his Juhu residence at 7.30 am on Thursday. The 84-year-old actor was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH) on July 7 after he suffered a cardiac arrest.
He was in the ICU and received dialysis for two days after his kidneys stopped functioning.
The actor was then taken home late on Wednesday night as his family wished that he spend his last moments with them. “He passed away at 7.30 am peacefully at his home,” Dr Ram Narain, COO, KDAH said. Later, speaking to the press, his actor son Vindu Dara Singh said, “He was a tough guy ... He wanted to stay fit. But unfortunately his body was getting weaker. An angel has now gone to shine like a star up above.”
The actor was taken in a procession from his Juhu home Dara Villa to the Pawan Hans Crematorium in the afternoon. Condolences poured in from across the nation as politicians, Bollywood actors and several fans paid their last respects to the legend. Remembering the actor, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said, “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of Dara Singh, who has been an inspiration and icon to many generations in our country ... his contribution to…cinema, wrestling and the Upper House of Parliament will be remembered by millions,”
Dara Singh, a commonwealth-wrestling champion, earned titles of “Rustam-e-Punjab” and “Rustam-e-Hind” after competing in wrestling events across the world
