‘Super Sherpa’ climbs Mt. Everest 21st time
A 51-year-old Nepali sherpa has broken his own record for the most successful climbs of Mount Everest by scaling the world’s highest peak for the 21st time.
Apa Sherpa successfully scaled the 8,848-metre Mt. Everest 21st times on Wednesday morning, said Ang Tshering Sherpa, the chairman of Asian Trekking that organised the Eco Everest Expedition 2011.
Apa Sherpa, known as “Super Sherpa”, first scaled the Everest in 1989 and has repeated the feat almost annually since then.
After his latest expedition, Apa said he is committed to bring awareness to the world community about Climate Change and to help remove old garbage from the slopes of Mt. Sagarmatha (Mount Everest).
Apa Sherpa and other members of the expedition Chris Shumate, 49 (USA), Bruno Gremior, 39 (Switzerland) together with three high altitude climbing guides Ang Dawa Sherpa, Phurba Sherpa and Arita Sherpa stood on the top of the Everest at 9.15 am on Wednesday, the official said.
Expedition leader Dawa Steven Sherpa said, “This Expedition is focused on climbing in an Eco-sensitive manner to keep Mount Everest clean and collect garbage, debris and waste left by past expedition groups.”
The collected garbage will be brought down to the Base Camp by members of the clean up team for proper disposal, he added.
Since 2008, the Eco Everest Expeditions have brought down to base camp more than 13,500 kilos of garbage accumulated in the Everest.
