Fashion is a cycle and it took its final turn of the year at the grand finale by Tarun Tahiliani at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week in Pragati Maidian. Keeping the blackberrys ticking and the Jimmy Choos clicking ever since the Autumn Winter Collection in March, through the Couture, Men’s and Bridal Weeks in between and finally to the Spring Summer Week that commenced recently, it was a very fashionably stressed time indeed.
So, when this grand finale, which was to be the last of the year, was announced, the scarf-furling, bag-bumping expectations were bound to run high.
But nothing less than spectacular was expected from the grand old man of fashion, Tarun. And deliver he did, with draped cloth trees embedding a smoke curtain, fascinating projections, that made even the front row crank their necks and startlingly mesmerising live music. But despite all the fanfare, the real show stopper remained the collection itself. Unfolding in colour schemes of beige, ivory white, ecru, olive, blush and charcoal, the luxury literally lied in the folds. Grecian drapes in cotton, delicate folds in taupe, crisp volume in silk and sheer structure in gauze, the designer this season moved away from his trademark embellishments and colour schemes and gave a stunning array of relaxed elegance on the ramp.
While Nehru jackets, gilets, anarkali kurtas, layered ghaghras, dhoti skirts, wrap gowns and statuesque turbans were brought down the runway, dresses with chikan embroidery, asymmetrical sleeves with delicate ostrich trims, sheer saris and drop crotch pants made a fine appearance too. However, there were the velvet waists, embellished shoulders and ombre sequins with mother of pearl bodices, appearing like a little self-indulgence he allowed himself in an otherwise neutral collection. Resident muse Shilpa Shetty walked the show wearing a bodice with a tulle lehanga. But what did throw us off, was Chitrangada Singh, who dazzled the runway in a sheer sari, and for once styled in a way that justified her gorgeousness.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
