Pat Stewart: I’ll choose how to die
Star Trek actor Sir Patrick Stewart has revealed his wish to be allowed an assisted death.
“I have the strong feeling that, should the time come for me, having had no role in my birth I would like there to be a choice I might make about how I die,” Sky News quoted the actor as telling Sunday Times.
He said that the choice to have an assisted death “should be a right”.
“I believe everybody possessed of a debilitating and incurable disease should be allowed to pick the hour of their death,” added Stewart, who was diagnosed with coronary heart disease five years ago.
It follows his decision to become a patron of Dignity in Dying, which campaigns for a change in the law.
The actor is one of several high-profile names who have expressed their support for the movement.

The television network Star India has made a big push into high-definition television by offering five channels in HD.
The move is expected to enable the burgeoning entertainment industry to embrace global technology standards and push the TV entertainment category towards HD. The five channels offering what Star India Pvt. Ltd calls “Asli HD” are Star Plus, Star Movies, Star Gold, Star World and Nat Geo.
The network says it is the only one to offer “Asli HD” — content shot in HD, recorded and edited in HD and mixed for 5.1 Dolby surround sound. It involves significant efforts by trained personnel using cutting edge technology, the company said. The “Asli HD” channels will bear the HD mark on their channel logos.
Viewers will still need a HD TV set and subscribe to the channels on DTH platforms.
Star also presented its new corporate logo — the Hot Star.
