Oasis split: Liam sues brother noel for ‘lies’

The battle between Noel Gallagher and his younger brother Liam, of British rock bank Oasis, which split two years ago, is getting complicated as Liam took his brother to court and sued him for libel.

The Gallagher brothers had formed Oasis in 1991, but broke up in 2009 when songwriter and lead guitarist of the Manchester band, 44-year-old Noel announced his decision to quit the band just before a gig in Paris.
The band was due to appear at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris.
In a statement on the band’s website, Noel said about the split two years ago: “It is with some sadness and great relief that I tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”
Both the brothers have had a turbulent relationship, which has been well documented in the British media.
Thirty-eight-year-old Liam (lead vocals), and other members of the Oasis, Colin Archer (guitar), Andy Bell (bass guitar), and Chris Sharrock (drums), later formed Beady Eye. However, Noel Gallagher has gone solo.
Liam has sued his elder brother for claiming last month that Oasis had to cancel a performance at the 2009 V Festival in Chelmsford because Liam was not in a fit state to perform. However, the official reason given at the time was that Liam was suffering from laryngitis.
“That is a lie and I want Oasis fans to know the truth. I was gutted when I couldn’t play the gig because I didn’t want to let the fans down. The truth is I had laryngitis, diagnosed by a doctor, preventing me performing that night,” Liam said in a statement, contradicting the claim made by his elder brother.
Liam demanded an official letter of apology from Noel, according to the Sun, but then decided to take action through the high court in London.
The decision by Liam to sue Noel comes just days after Noel said in an interview that he regrets his hasty decision to split Oasis in 2009. “I kind of made a snap decision, which I regret,” he told Absolute Radio. “If I had my time again I’d have thought more and gone back, done the gig and the next. There were only two left on the tour. We could maybe have all gone off and done other things for a few years.”
