The third edition of the Asian Awards that was held on Tuesday night in London honoured achievers across fields such as arts, business and entrepreneurship, technology and sport. Actor Anupam Kher, who crossed over to Western cinema, most recently with Silver Linings Playbook, was awarded with the Outstanding Achievement in Cinema.

Kher said, “I am truly humbled and honoured for being awarded the Asian Award for my work as an actor. As an actor all we do and want to do is make people laugh, cry, and persuade many other emotions by our craft. Our achievement at the end of the day is when the audience really does understand what we are doing. And the best part is when the spectrum is not India but Asia and the awards are not only for the category of cinema but other fields too. It is also an honour to be given this award the same year as Sir Ben Kingsley. Makes me feel very proud!”
The coveted Fellowship Award went to Kingsley who collected the award for his outstanding five-decade career. Bruce Lee was honoured with the prestigious Founders Award, for his impact and influence on Western cinema, and also to mark the 40th anniversary of his death.
Other winners include Hanif Kureshi, English playwright, filmmaker and novelist for arts, British actress Nina Wadia for television, Indian industrialist and philanthropist Adi Godrej for entrepreneur, Nicole Scherzinger, for music and Narayana Murthy for philanthropy, to name a few.
The award ceremony was hosted by Lord Sebastian Coe, who is billed as one of the masterminds behind the London 2012 Olympics.
The Asian Awards are the only event in the UK that celebrates achievements of individuals originating from the Asian continent including those living in UK, India, China, Japan, Korea, Singapore and other South and Far East countries.
Previous Asian award winners from the world of entertainment include some of Asia’s leading figures such as Sachin Tendulkar, Muttiah Muralitharan, Asha Bhosle, Jay Sean, A.R. Rahman and Ratan Tata.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
