Kate chooses charities for support

Newly-wed Duchess of Cambridge, who used to be known formerly as Kate Middleton, will become a Scout volunteer and has chosen to be a patron of four charities.
The duchess, who will turn 30 on Monday, is now a royal patron of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and The Art Room and a patron of Action on Addiction and the National Portrait Gallery in London. She will also become a volunteer in the Scout Association, volunteering time privately with groups in north Wales and elsewhere as opportunity arises, the Clarence House announced.
All senior royals take on charity work on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II and William’s mother Diana became the nation’s sweetheart for her charity work.

Tuna fetches record $736k at Japan auction
A deep-pocketed restaurateur shelled out nearly three-quarters of a million dollars for a single tuna fish at Japan’s Tsukiji fish market on Thursday, smashing a previous record.
The 269 km bluefin — caught off the coast of Japan’s northern Aomori prefecture — stood at an eye-popping 56.49 million yen ($736,500) when the hammer came down in the first auction of the year.
The figure dwarfs the previous high of 32.49 million yen paid at last year’s inaugural auction at Tsukiji, a huge working market that also features on many Tokyo tourist itineraries. — AFP

Barbie to get some Kardashian gal pals?
Is Barbie cosying up with the Kardashians? Celebrity magazine Us Weekly reported that the world’s most famous doll was getting three high-profile new friends — reality TV stars Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian. Us Weekly quoted an unnamed source as saying that the Kardashian sisters — who found fame in the show Keeping Up with the Kardashians — will be immortalised as Barbie’s pals in an upcoming limited-edition doll line. “The dolls will reflect the girls’ measurements and may even come in Kardashian-designed outfits,” the source said. Barbie doll makers Mattel declined to comment, saying they never comment on “product rumours.” — Reuters

Demi Moore fears not being worthy of love
Actress Demi Moore, who recently ended her six-year marriage to Ashton Kutcher, says her worst fear is finding she is “not worthy of being loved”. In an interview conducted just one week after Moore filed for divorce in November, she opened up to her friend, British photographer Amanda De Cadenet, for the February edition of Harper’s Bazaar magazine. Moore, 49, did not directly address her split with Kutcher. The marriage foundered after a San Diego woman went public about a brief fling she had with Kutcher. Moore said: “What scares me is that I’m going to ultimately find out at the end of my life that I’m really not loveable.” — Reuters

Theron vows not to perform dangerous stunts
Actress Charlize Theron has vowed that she will never perform dangerous stunts after an accident on the set of 2004’s Aeon Flux had almost left her paralysed.
The 36-year-old said she will not be putting her health at risk when work starts on the Mad Max remake in Australia later in 2012, Daily Star reported.
“It’s wise because I felt guilty for shutting down a production 10 days into shooting for eight weeks,” she said.
“That injury scared me — I was almost paralysed. So I’m about to go and do Mad Max: Fury Road with George Miller. That’s going to be physical and I’ve been training. You do everything you can do, but I’m definitely at a place where I can say, ‘I don’t need to do that,’” she added.
The actress was completing a series of backflips for the sci-fi action movie when she landed awkwardly on her neck, hurting a disc dangerously close to her spinal chord. — PTI

Timberlake, Biel engaged?
London: Singer Justin Timberlake and actress Jessica Biel have reportedly got engaged after he proposed her during holidays. The 30-year-old proposed Biel, 27, last month during a pre-Christmas break in Jackson, US, after they reunited following a three-month split.
“Justin knows how much she loves snow boarding and the mountains, so it was the perfect place. This was the basis for getting back together. When they reunited, they had a conversation about taking the next step,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted a source as saying. The couple, who have dated on-and-off for the past four years, celebrated their engagement with their family and friends at Timberlake’s home in Montana. — IANS

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
