Iron Man 3 posts second best opening with $175 million
Disney and Marvel’s superhero franchise Iron Man 3 has pulled off the second biggest domestic opening with an overhaul of $175. 3 millions this weekend, second only to the $207.4 million of Marvel’s previous release The Avengers.
The latest outing of Tony Stark aka Iron Man grossed $175.9 million in its second weekend, putting the 3D movie’s international total at $504.8 million and early worldwide haul at $680.1 million.
Internationally too the film remains strong. China leads with a whopping $63.5 million, the top opening of all time for a Marvel film, the Hollywood Reporter said.
The film sees the return of Robert Downey Jr as the superhero while Gwyneth Paltrow was back as Stark’s girlfriend Pepper Potts and Don Cheadle as James Rhodes.
Actor Ben Kingsley is the main antagonist as The Mandarine besides Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall.
The film’s release has impacted the other releases. Michael Bay’s Pain and Gain fell 63 per cent in its second weekend to second place with $7.6 million for a ten-day domestic total of $33.9 million.
Tom Cruise starrer Oblivion fell 67 per cent in its third weekend to $5.8 million for a domestic earning of $76 million. Oblivion earned $6.5 million overseas from 61 markets for a worldwide haul of $222.8 million.
