Fashion with art dazzles on Day 2
When designer duo Ashima and Leena, veterans in the couture industry, presented their glam bridal wear, the front row saw an interesting mix of people from the art as well as fashion world. So if Sufi singer Zila Khan enth-ralled the audience with her soul-stirring voice, artist Alka Raghuvanshi, Kuchipudi danseuse Kaushalya Reddy, Uma Gajapathi Raju, Nalini Singh, Neelam Pratap Rudy, Bina Ramani, Amaan Ali Khan and Tikka Shatrujit Singh cheered for the designers.
The collection, which has been titled “Raag Rattan”, speaks of elegance and timeless beauty. As Zila opened the show with Kesariya Balam, Pia Trivedi led the army of models in opulent ensembles.
Starting with white and ivory, the colour palette gradually moved to lighter colours followed by slightly darker shades.
Glittering accents and beaten gold work on sheer and sensuous drapes, intricate embroidery on Anarkali kurtas, jewel enhancements on cholis and pearl finish on hems and shoes (wedges encrusted with diamante) were some of the highlights of the collection.
Saris in net, sheer with ornate cholis and heavily embellished lehenga-s/skirts were sometimes accompanied by long sheer jackets that only enhanced the look.
Few Anarkali kurtas in salmon pink and pista green and jewel-loaded lehengas in haute pink and bright orange later, brocade brought a warm feeling nostalgia for the olden days.
The rich, luxurious fabric was interestingly used to add grace to voluminous kurtas with kerchief hems, churidaars, blouses and as patchwork on organza jackets. A bit of velvet was also used to make a strong base for jewelled cholis.
As the collection inched towards the climax, Bollywood actor and former Censor Board chief Sharmila Tagore made an appearance in a cheerful orange sari teamed with an embellished net jacket in the same hue.
She was unusually giggly and took quick steps as she walked only to halt just a few steps before the far end of the runway.
It was a nice change for the shutterbugs, whose cameras are used to focusing on the leggy lasses as showstoppers.
The action then moved to an off-site show by designers Anamika Khanna and Gaurav Gupta. As Evoluzione, The Kila opened its gates for the select audience, fashion lovers enjoyed a sit down show and surprise performances.
Anamika Khanna’s collection was created for a woman who loves to explore the world and make it her own; a woman, who respects tradition and but makes her own rules.
Whereas Gaurav Gupta presented his interpretation of the “Global Indian mindset” through his clothes, which were opulent and grand in every sense.
