Dev was staying in London to recuperate
Dev Anand had been staying in London for two weeks already and was planning to stay for at least three to four months to recuperate after releasing his latest film, Chargesheet, according to sources. The actor-director’s body was moved to a mortuary late in the night and is most likely not going to face a coroner’s inquest. The nature of the death and age of the person will lead to a death certificate issued immediately, a Met police spokesperson said in general terms when asked about the process for registering a death in the UK. The police did not comment specifically on Dev Anand’s death.
“If the deceased was not seen by the doctor issuing the medical certificate after he or she died, or during the 14 days before the death, the death must be reported to the coroner,” according to British rules on coroner’s inquests. The coroner will decide if a post-mortem is needed and if an inquest must be held.
The UK representative for Navketan International Films, Kenny Muir, told this newspaper that he along with the star’s family was making arrangements for funeral, but asked for some time to reveal the final details.
Dev Anand’s sister Sheel Kanta Kapur, mother of film director Shekhar Kapur, who stays in Surrey, along with Suniel Anand will take a decision on whether the funeral will take place in London, sources indicated.
The Indian high commission said that the actor-director’s family had not been in touch to get a certificate to repatriate the body to India as yet. “If the body is taken to India, the family will need a certificate from the high commission. No one has been in touch as yet,” sources in the high commission said.
With indications that the funeral will be held in London, no confirmation is available as yet about the day or the venue of the funeral. If the funeral is held in London, no permission or certificate is needed from the high commission. There are unconfirmed reports that the funeral will take place in London on Tuesday or Wednesday, but no confirmation has been made by Navkaten Films in the UK as yet. The family has requested “privacy until further announcements are made.”
