Classic Indian to new-age Western
In many cultures Sunday is dedicated to Gods, and if fashion is an unwritten cult then the designers are nothing less than demigods for the followers. The second day of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring Summer 2012-13 started with interesting themes and fresh names, but as the day unfolded the celebration of prints on the runway was evident.
The combined show by labels like Surbhi Chawla, Kushi Z, Taniya Khanuja and Sakshee Pradhan opened the day two, where actress Diana Penty walked the ramp for Sakshee and added the much-needed zest in the lazy afternoon show.
The next show by Samant Chauhan was a journey through the old-world of Rajasthan, where this talented NIFT graduate tried to revive the Poshak cult by incorporating rich Bhagalpuri silk and cotton in a contemporary ethnic silhouette. The designer exhibited his love for Indian textiles and crafted a line of long voluminous cotton-silk gowns, asymmetric jackets in raw silk, and pure cotton saris. He picked up his signature colour palette and used off-white, beige, brown and cream hues with metallic bronze and gold coloured embroidery at the waist and neckline area. In some pieces he even used white pearls and tassels to give a rich royal look. His showstopper actor Manoj Bajpayee walked in a manly brown jacket with gold medallions and beige coloured slim-fit Jodhpuri pants.
The mood shifted from classic Indianwear to new-age Westernwear when designer Kanika Saluja Choudhry of label Aanikka presented her collection with a twisted ideology for a diva. The metallic spikes, chunky embellishments and chains used in her outfits contradicted the soft ice-cream colour palette she picked up for this collection, but overall it was bold enough to make a style statement that would befit a gorgeous lady. After all sticks and stones may break your bones, but what’s good fashion without a bit of discomfort.
The next show in the line was by petite pair Ankur and Priyanka Modi of the label am:pm, who gave a toast to the classic black and white combination with their perplexed prints.
The designers developed beautiful prints inspired by ancient Maya civilisation and created a beautiful line of gowns, jumpsuits, jackets and dresses in silk satin and organza. The fluid fabrics with checkered and mosaic prints looked exquisite on the ramp and won rave reviews. The next show by designer duo Dev r Nil also looked like an extension of the print affair started by the am:pm couple.
