CBE for Bonham Carter, KBE for Apple designer
Manchester Unive-rsity’s Nobel Prize-winning physicists, Prof. Andre Geim and Prof. Konstantin Novoselov were honoured with knighthoods for “services to science” in the New Year Honours List on Saturday.
GlaxoSmithKline’s chief executive officer Andrew Witty has been honoured with knighthood for “services to the economy and to the UK pharmaceutical industry.” Actress Helena Bonham Carter has been made a CBE in the honours list. Jonathan Ive, the British-born designer of at Apple, who designed the iPad, iPod and iPhone, has been awarded the KBE.
British Prime Minister David Cameron is facing severe criticism for presence in the honours list of former convict Gerald Ronson who was implicated in a share-trading scandal and Tory donor Paul Ruddock, who has given more than £500,000 to party coffers since 2003.
In sports, former umpire Dickie Bird has been honoured with an OBE. Golf champions, Darren Clarke has been given an OBE and Rory McIlroy, 22, the US Open winner for 88 years, has been made an MBE.
Booker Prize-winner Penelope Lively, 78, has been made a dame and Geoffrey Hill, 79, who was appointed Oxford professor of poetry last year, has been knighted for services to literature.
