Paving his ‘silk route’ to Bollywood success

Sometimes the culmination of a journey sets the course for a new beginning. For singer Mohit Chauhan, the disbanding of Silk Route paved the way for his re-discovery as a big league singer in Bollywood.

“It was the A.R. Rahman composition Khoon Chala from Rang De Basanti that opened the gates of the film industry for me,” Chauhan recalls. While that song set the ball rolling, Chauhan prefers to credit each of the songs that followed, as the stepping-stone for him. “I would say there have been a series of turning points, instead of singling out just one particular moment in my career,” he says.
As Rang De Basanti’s success paved the way for Chauhan to make further inroads in the film industry, the talented singer didn’t disappoint. He exercised his vocal chords and the results were chartbusters from Delhi 6, Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal, New York and Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, to name a few. Now, the music of his upcoming film Rockstar is already creating waves.
“It has been good so far and I believe I have a long way to go,” the singer measures his achievement with a modest tone. Recalling his days with Silk Route, he says, “Those were the fresh and carefree days. Call it the blooming stage for an artist. I have fond memories from that phase of my life.”
When asked if the band is in the mood for a reunion, Chauhan chooses to evade giving a clear answer. “If that happens, I would love it, but right now, the chances look slim.” Amidst all this, the singer also released
his solo music album titled Fitoor, which was appreciated.
“I am working on my second album now, which will be out soon. It has melody, romance and an earthly touch to it. An album gives you the liberty to flow with your own rhythm. Perhaps, it allows you far greater scope of creativity and you can be your versatile best,” he muses.
Interestingly, Chauhan doesn’t view his success story in Bollywood as the ultimate goal, but rather, the insatiable urge of the artist in him hopes to explore new avenues. “I am a fan of Kishor Kumar and admire how versatile an artist he was. He remains my biggest inspiration,” he concludes.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
