Music beyond boundaries

Describing singer Lata Mangeshkar as a “Vishwa Ratna”, Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan has said her soulful music transcends geographical and linguistic boundaries.
“There is hardly any Indian language in which Lata Mangeshkar has not sung. Her music is as popular in Pakistan, Bangladesh and other countries as in India. She is the icon of at least three generations,” the governor said.
Sankaranarayanan was speaking after conferring the “Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati National Eminence Award” on Lata Mangeshkar, 80, for her lifetime services to music at a glittering ceremony held in Shanmukhananda Hall in Mumbai Saturday night.
The award instituted by the South Indian Education Society (SIES) was also presented to Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev and scientist Arvind Gupta. The 69th Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, Swami Jayendra Saraswati, also attended the function.
The award comprises a citation, a brass lamp weighing 55 kg and a cheque of `2.5 lakhs.
