Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream not so sunny
Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson’s latest album, Teenage Dream, is a sweet serenade of a vivacious pop diva, but packs no punch and falls flat.
Boring is what best describes Teenage Dream. But it’s sort of surprising that the star who sang ‘Hot N Cold’, could turn a track about California Girls into a library yawn!
Featuring a kick-start by Snoop Dogg, an ode to the West Coast and enough candy to make babies cringe, Perry’s barrage of dancy, displaced funk comes complete with amateur lyrics for the acne-fighting 14-year-old and oh yes, the new-age must have a ‘parental advisory’ tag.
There is, absolutely nothing new about Katy Perry’s new album. It sort of pushes down our throats, a confounding template of synthesised sounds and imagery, leaving listeners with really no choice but wonder – where’s music going?
Perry’s ‘Hot N Cold’ was such a move! And the world hadn’t even stopped dancing when she released this Soviet winter of a tribute to one of the greatest places ever, Sunny California! Will you relate to sandy beaches, gorgeous women and slow-moving Impalas after this album? The answer is, an unfortunate no. And, when you sing there’s ‘Something in the water’, there is – your new album, Ms Perry.
However, if you’re the die-hard fan, there’s ‘Pearl’, and lyrics you’ll probably note down and keep between the pages of your diary. Is this song essential Katy? Yes.
Two stars for Teenage Dream. One for the video and the other for ‘Pearl’ – the only song that carries the Perry cut.
