Worker dies on monorail site
A 21-year-old labourer was killed at a monorail project site near the Arthur Road Jail, reportedly after part of a crane came crashing down. However, contrasting reports are also suggesting that the victim came under the front wheel of the crane after his slipper got stuck under a wheel. The incident took place at around 11 am on Friday. The deceased was part of the team that supported the hopper lifted by the Ferana crane.
The victim has been identified as Mohammed Hamid Alam, originally from Uttar Pradesh. The driver, Shatrughan, employed with J Kumar infrastructure fled from the spot.
Kishore Baviskar, senior police inspector of Agripada police station said, “We have registered a case of negligence against Shatrughan and seized the crane; further probe is underway.”
Dilip Kawathkar, joint project director (PR) for MMRDA, the authority constructing the monorail, said, “It appears that Alam slipped and was not noticed by the crane driver, so he was run over. However, MMRDA will form a committee for detailed inquiry to find out the exact cause of the mishap and then take action accordingly.” The MMRDA also said that it would ensure that the contractor pays proper
compensation to the family of the deceased at the earliest.
The monorail project is slated to connect Jacob’s Circle to Chembur, a distance of over 20 km, by the end of this year and the contractors were pushing to get the work done faster as monsoon is approaching.

Mumbai, May 31
The Manickpur police on Thursday arrested a 42-year-old motorman with the Western Railways for allegedly attempting to sodomize a 19-year-old boy of his colleague, who is also a motorman at Vasai. The boy’s parents had gone out of town for a few days when the incident took place on May 26. The boy then narrated the incident to his parents, who filed a complaint with the police.
According to the police, the boy, who had recently appeared for his class 12 examination is a resident of Vasant Nagari in Vasai (east). The accused lives in a nearby building in the same housing society. On the morning of May 26, the accused, Deepak Virendrakumar Mandorai woke up and after having a bath, went to the victim’s residence to see the boy sleeping in his bed. “He tried removing his pajamas and touched him inappropriately. He attempted unnatural sex when the boy screamed and pushed him aside. Mandorai then threatened him with dire consequences if he spoke about the incident to anyone,” said a police official.
