Woman run over by train, 2 kids with her survive
In a tragic incident, a woman was run over by a speeding train between Tilak Nagar and Chembur stations on Tuesday morning, while two children accompanying her — aged three and one-and-a-half years —escaped miraculously.
“The woman was run over by a train travelling on down direction near Tilak Nagar railway station at around 6.05 am. The children, a three-year-old girl and a one-and-a-half-year-old boy, were found near the tracks,” said Deepak Naik, assistant police inspector, Wadala GRP,adding that the officers are trying to ascertain the exact sequence of the events.
Passengers and nearby slumdwellers quickly reached the spot and rescued the children before any further tragedy could take place. The children were in shock and were wailing constantly, the police said.
The woman was taken to Sion Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. The police is yet to ascertain the identity of the women and her relationship with the children. However, the police suspects that she could be their mother. According to the GRP, investigations are currently on to ascertain whether this is a case of suicide or accident.
The children have been sent to the Dongri remand home. “We have deployed policemen with photographs of the children in the Tilak Nagar area,” Mr Naik said.
The police has registered a case of accidental death in this regard.
“We will take statements of the motorman. A wireless message has also been sent to other police stations about the incident,” said Mr Naik.
