Water supply back to normal in Girgaum

After the BMC completed repair work on the broken pipeline in Girgaum, which also caused a huge road cave-in, water supply to the area was regularised on Sunday morning bringing relief to local residents. However, the road repair works continued till evening and traffic was normalised only late in the night.
An 800-mm main pipeline supplying water to Girgaum area had burst on Saturday morning at Birla Krida Kendra near Girgaum Chowpatty, causing a massive cave-in on the road that connects Girgaum Chowpatty to Marine Drive. Water supply to areas like Thakurdwar Marg, JSS Marg and Khadilkar Marg was affected due to the pipeline burst.
Chief engineer (hydraulic department) Ramesh Bamble said, “The morning supply to these areas starts at 4 am. We managed to complete the pipeline repairs by Saturday night and the supply was restored in the morning.”
The road cave-in had also caused a 10-foot crater on the road due to which traffic was diverted to other roads. The civic roads department had carried out the road repair by Sunday evening.
Parag Masurkar, assistant municipal commissioner of D ward, said, “The road repair work was completed by 4 pm and the traffic on one side started soon after.”
Civic road department officials said that south-bound traffic on the road was normalised by early evening, while the north-bound traffic was normalised by 10 pm.
According to the civic officials, as the pipeline burst took place on the VIP road, the repair works were carried out on a priority basis. “The emergency repairs works cell of the hydraulic department was pressed into operation along with hydraulic maintenance, sewage disposal, roads, storm water drain and fire brigade departments for the repair works,” said an official from the hydraulic department.
