In the latest case of online shopping fraud, an Internet shopping portal allegedly duped a Malabar Hill businessman by promising lucrative discounts. The complainant, who wanted to surprise his son by gifting him a cellphone on New Year’s Eve, was surprised to find that the shopping portal did not deliver the phone, despite the full payment being made. The businessman conducted his own investigation for six months before approaching the Malabar Hill police station.
According to the police, Chetan Ghiya, wanted to surprise his college-going son, Priyank, on New Year’s Eve, by gifting him a new smartphone. After visiting some online merchants, he came across one, which offered a 25 per cent discount on the phone.
“Ghiya liked the offer and on December 29, 2012, he placed the order for the same. He made the full payment online with his credit card, and also received a receipt for the same. He was informed that he would receive the phone in three days time, but it was never delivered,” said PI Sanjay Naik, of the Malabar Hill police station.
Mr Ghiya made several attempts to
contact the company operating the portal, but this resulted in nothing. Finally, he approached the cyber police, which directed him to the Malabar Hill station. An offence under section 420 (cheating) of the IPC, and 66 (d) of the Information Technology Act, was registered against the company.
“We are taking the cyber cell’s assistance
in the case, to obtain the
details of the
online shopping portal’s parent company. We have also written to the concerned bank for details on the transaction,” Mr Naik added.
