Two drown in Dadar Chowpatty
An afternoon of fun turned into tragedy for two teenagers, who drowned at Dadar Chowpatty on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Mahim police, Yashodhan Chandrakant Gangurde (18) and Mangesh Pagare (15) along with another friend Pappu Kore (15), went for a swim to Dadar Chowpatty in the afternoon. All of them are residents of the Matunga labour camp.
Yashodhan and Mangesh entered the water while Pappu sat on the shore. “Moments later Yashodhan began to get pulled in by the tide and started screaming for help. Mangesh went ahead to save him. However, the duo was swept away into the sea,” said Mr Bhagwan Kadam, assistant police inspector from the Mahim police station. “Pappu raised an alarm, after which he took the duo’s clothes from the shore and rushed to their residence to alert their parents” said Mr Kadam. Meanwhile, locals rushed to save the duo. But by the time they reached the spot, Yashodhan was already brought out dead. “The rescue workers conducted a search operation with the help of a speedboat in order to locate Mangesh. He was later fished out at around 7 pm and rushed to Sion Hospital, where he was declared dead,” said Mr Kadam.
Yashodhan’s father works in a private company. “We quizzed Yashodhan’s father and he said that the boys had not informed their parents that they were going swimming,” added Mr Kadam.
The Mahim police has registered a case of accidental death in this connection.
