Transport hub near Thane soon
The Thane Municipal Corporation has drawn up plans to build a multi-mode transport hub comprising a railway station, Metro station and a bus station on government land between Mulund and Thane.
“The TMC has offered to build the new station on a plot of land reserved for the state health department. Our plan is to decongest the Thane railway station, which witnesses 15 lakh footfalls daily,”
said a high-ranking CR officer.
Confirming the development, the TMC commissioner R.A. Rajeev said, “We have planned to integrate a new Metro and bus station with the suburban railway system. We have already received a positive response from the Central Railway (CR), and have engaged consultants for this proposal.” Mr Rajeev has discussed this project with CR general manager Subodh Jain.
A total of 124 local trains originate from and terminate at Thane. “All the Thane locals would be shifted to the new proposed railway station in between Mulund and Thane, and hence, around 2.5 lakh commuters (20 percent of the total commuters at Thane) can be shifted,” said the CR officer.
Further, to provide connectivity to the Trans-Harbour route (Thane-Navi Mumbai), the TMC has also offered to construct a travelator. “The one km-long travelator will help those opting for the Trans-Harbour route,” added the officer.
