Tiss, Rachana Sansad to study hawkers’ policy
To formalise its hawkers’ policy for Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has appointed Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Rachana Sansad as consultants to study the proposed policy. The agencies have also been assigned the task of preparing a report on proper regulation of hawkers.
According to civic officials, there is a desperate need to implement the hawkers’ policy in the city, owing to the growing number of hawkers. To facilitate this policy, hawkers need to be accommodated and regulated as per the required guidelines under the National Hawkers Policy. Types of hawkers, their locations, requisites and scheduled timings have to be studied properly by the experts and agencies for the implementation of this policy.
In a discussion held with Tiss and Rachana Sansad officials, the BMC asked them to study hawkers in the city at a cost of `3.51 lakh and `5.20 lakh respectively. The proposal will be tabled for approval before the civic standing committee on Wednesday.
“Both Tiss and Rachana Sansad have been asked to submit their study reports within three months,” said a senior civic official.
The agencies are required to study ways to accommodate the hawkers in numbers prescribed by the National Hawkers Policy. They will also study the different types of hawkers like still and moving handcarts, squatter licencees, hawkers carrying overhead goods, among others.
