Suspensions to be revoked?

Suspension of the five legislators, who were found guilty of beating up police sub-inspector Sachin Suryavanshi in the Vidhan Bhavan premises, might be revoked in the coming week. The Opposition on Thursday demanded that as the officer in question has also resumed duty, the suspension of the MLAs from the Legislative Assembly should also be revoked. Speaker Dilip Walse Patil, however, said that though the House took the decision to suspend the legislators, it is now up to the government and the Opp-osition to take the call on recalling the suspension.
As the proceedings of the House started in the morning, leader of Opposition Eknath Khadse raised the issue. He pleaded that no person can be punished twice, as it is being done in this case.
“All the five legislators have been suspended from the House for one year. At the same time, the police has also filed a chargesheet against two legislators for beating up the police sub-inspector. The members can’t be punished twice for a mistake, and hence it is necessary to revoke their suspension,” Mr Khadse asserted.
The Opposition leader even demanded for the report of the legislators committee that was formed under the chairmanship of senior legislator Ganpatrao Deshmukh to investigate the incident. He also questioned as to why the report had not yet been tabled in the Assembly. “The committee was constituted by the Assembly and hence it is mandatory to table the report in the House,” Mr Khadse said.
Replying, the speaker said that the resolution to revoke the suspension should be moved by the government. “There is no need to table the entire report, as the findings and recommendations of the Deshmukh committee were already tabled in the House,” Mr Patil clarified.
MLAs Ram Kadam (MNS), Kshitij Thakur (Bahujan Vikas Aghadi), Rajan Salvi (Shiv Sena), Pradeep Jaiswal (Independent) and Jaykumar Raval (BJP) were suspended in the Budget Session of the state Legislature after beating up police sub-inspector in the Vidhan Bhavan premises. Mr Thakur and Mr Kadam were also arrested for beating up a police officer. The legislators have, however, alleged that Mr Suryavanshi had misbehaved with them earlier.
