Suspension of all 5 legislators revoked
The state Assembly, on Wednesday revoked the suspension of all five legislators, who were suspended for beating up police sub-inspector Sachin Suryawanshi in the Vidhan Bhavan premises, with immediate effect. The proposal for recalling the suspension was passed unanimously in the House.
Legislators Ram Kadam (MNS), Kshitij Thakur (Bahujan Vikas Aghadi), Rajan Salvi (Shiv Sena), Pradeep Jaiswal (Independent) and Jaykumar Raval (BJP) were suspended for one year during the Budget Session of the state Legislature after police sub-inspector was assaulted.
Parliamentary affairs minister Harshwardhan Patil put up the proposal for withdrawing the suspension of legislators after the Appropriation Bill was approved. Mr Patil said that the panel formed to probe the attack on the police officer recommended revoking the suspension of legislators.
“The Opposition leaders also assured that such an incident would not be repeated by their public representatives. In view of this, I am tabling the proposal for revoking the suspension of all five legislators,” Mr Patil said. Speaker Dilip Walse-Patil sought a voice vote on the proposal, which was passed without any resistance.
The MLAs were suspended in the Budget Session of the state Legislature after beating up policeman Sachin Suryawanshi in the Vidhan Bhavan premises. The police officer had been beaten up a day after he stopped Thakur’s vehicle and imposed a fine for over-speeding on the Bandra-Worli Sea link. An FIR had been registered on March 19 at the Marine Drive police station against Thakur, Kadam and 14 others in this case. The two MLAs had been booked for assaulting, criminal intimidation, rioting etc. The duo was arrested on March 21, but the court granted them bail on March 25. When the Monsoon Session of the state Legislature began this month, the Opposition had demanded that as the policeman in question had resumed duty, the suspension of the MLAs should also be revoked. Speaker Mr Walse-Patil had then said it was up to the government and the Opposition to take a call.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena legislator Subhash Desai also demanded that Omraje Nimbalkar’s suspension be revoked. Mr Nimbalkar was suspended for lifting up the mace from Speaker’s table while protesting the acute water scarcity in Osmanabad city of Marathwada region during the Budget session. The demand was also supported by MNS legislator Bala Nandgaonkar and BJP legislator Girish Bapat.
