Study to research diabetes type 2 takes off
In a first-of-its-kind study in Asia, Ruby Hall Clinic is conducting a global research on “Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery proving to be the best available remedy for Diabetes Type 2”.
A total of 88 patients, who are overweight or fall in grade 1 obesity bracket with uncontrolled diabetes, are being monitored under two different treatment procedures. Half of them are on a complete regimen of diabetes treatment by medication and half of them were operated on using the gastric bypass (a type of bariatric surgery) procedure. University of Washington and Florida have also collaborated for this study and deputed two doctors who are participating in it. It is believed that the study will reveal many unknown facts about diabetes in Asians —particularly Indians.
Dr Jayshree Todkar, director of bariatric, metabolic and laparoscopic department, Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune and Dr L.H. Hiranandani Hospital, Mumbai said, “This is the only study in Asia which when completed, will establish whether medication or gastric bypass surgery is a more viable and better option to treat Type 2 diabetes in people who are overweight and obese.”
The 88 patients who have been selected are from all over Maharashtra and in the age bracket between 25 and 65 years. According to Dr Todkar, the research will be a milestone when it will be complete, as it will establish as to why Indians are more diabetogenic and how it can be addressed. “The study is not just a mere follow-up, we are studying how the gut hormones respond to the food intake by the body, which hormones play a major role and how does the sugar change in the body. These finding might be able to establish why Indians are more prone to the disease as compared to others in the world.”
