State is murder suspect: Raj
MNS chief Raj Thackeray on Thursday claimed that there is a growing suspicion that the murder of rationalist Dr Narendra Dabholkar was state-sponsored and therefore the case has not been cracked yet. Mr Thackeray made the statement after a meeting with Dr Dabholkar’s daughter, Mukta at his residence in Mumbai.
Claiming that the police has no clue and the probe has come to a standstill Mr Thackeray said, “There are no news reports on the progress in the investigation. No one is asking the government also about it. No one knows where the
culprits went after shooting Dr Dabholkar. Since there is no breakthrough in the murder case of Narendra Dabholkar, the needle of suspicion is pointing towards the state government. There is growing suspicion whether it was a state-sponsored murder as the case is yet to be cracked.”
In response to a question on whether the case should be handed over to the CBI, Mr Thackeray said that the state police was capable of handling cases. “We are bringing in the CBI for rape, robbery and all other offences. What is the police for if the CBI has to investigate every other crime?” he asked.
Mr Thackeray argued that if the state government had cleared the anti-superstition bill earlier, Dr Dabholkar’s killing could have been prevented. In view of the public outcry, a few days after Dr Dabholkar’s murder in broad daylight, the state government approved the new draft bill and issued an ordinance to this effect.
Mukta Dabholkar met Mr Thackeray at his residence and unveiled a book containing information about how black magic is being used to cheat gullible people.
The Congress and the NCP both have slammed the MNS chief’s comments. State Congress chief Manikrao Thakre said that Mr Thackeray was just looking for publicity by
making such statements. Maharashtra NCP spokesperson, Nawab Malik, claimed that Mr Thackeray should know about murders and cover ups as he himself was alleged to have been involved in the murder of Ramesh Kini.
Mr Malik said, “Mr Thackeray has the experience of sponsoring murder while in power. As a result he made such allegations against the ruling DF government.”
The NCP spokesperson added that there is a question in everyone’s minds whether he sponsored the murder of Ramesh Kini, a Mumbai resident who was found dead in a cinema in Pune in 1996 when the Shiv Sena-BJP government was in power. Initially, the Congress, led by Chhagan Bhujbal, had alleged that Kini was murdered at the Mr Thackeray’s behest.
However, the CBI, that was investigating the case filed a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and the trial court discharged Mr Thackeray.
