Soon, policy for disposal of debris
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has decided to formulate a policy and rules for the disposal of construction and demolition (C&D) waste generated due to the innumerable developmental work undertaken by the government and private agencies in the city and the adjoining areas. The step has been necessitated because of the unauthorised dumping of C&D waste on the mangroves, which is causing environmental evils. The MMRDA has invited expression of interest from consultants to find out ways of appropriately disposing off the C&D waste.
“The authority expects the appointed consultant to suggest sound and scientific methods for disposing off C&D waste within a period of six months from the date of the appointment,” said Ashwini Bhide, additional metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.
“Examining international case studies, especially of Asian countries in C&D waste disposal, related environmental issues such as noise pollution, formulation of guidelines for systematic collection, transportation of waste, examining the best practices employed within the country and abroad etc. are few of the major responsibilities the consultants are required to fulfill,” she added.
