‘Shocked’ API’s wife in hospital
The wife of API Chandrakant Mahajan, who shot himself on Wednesday afternoon due to family issues, has been admitted to a Nashik hospital when she heard of the incident.
According to police sources, she is in “shock” and is yet to give a credible statement to the police. Mr Mahajan, on the other hand, is reported to be out of danger and is positively responding to treatment. An inquiry, headed by the divisional ACP, has also been initiated into the incident.
“We are in touch with her brother in Nashik who is attending to her at the hospital at Karande in Nashik. An officer and a constable has also been sent there to record her statement,” said an officer from Chunabhatti police station.
“He is critical, but stable and has begun moving his limbs. He is also responding to questions, but is not talking normally. A call on further surgeries will be taken in a day or two,” said additional commissioner of police (east region) Quaiser Khalid. Luckily, the bullet, which exited through the same side, only grazed the brain. Mr Khalid added that an inquiry by ACP Milind Bhise has also been initiated into the incident. “The inquiry will focus on what transpired during the incident and the cause based on statements given by his wife, mother and colleagues,” Mr Khalid said. API Mahajan’s mother, meanwhile, reached the city and is at the Sethana-Surana Hospital, where he is being treated.
The Chunabhatti police has, however, not registered any case and only made a diary entry of the incident.
API Mahajan, who is attached to the Anti-Terrorist Cell of Chunabhatti police station, shot himself in the jaw at around 3 pm on Wednesday inside his cabin. He asked his staff to go out and then took the extreme step. Mr Mahajan had had a fight with his wife the same morning due to which he was under stress. He was also advised by senior PI Damodar Chaudhary to take the day off during a meeting with DCP Lakhmi Gautam.
