Sena against shifting of Jijamata zoo
The Shiv Sena is opposing the proposal to shift the Veermata Jijabai Bhonsale Garden and Zoo, popularly known as Rani Bagh, from its current location.
Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) had proposed the plan to shift the zoo to either Aarey Colony in Goregaon or to Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Borivali. The plan was prepared by MTDC’s special committee, which had appointed a consultant M/s Fortress Infrastructure Advisory Services for assessment and preparation of a detailed report for the development of various tourism projects in Mumbai.
Shiv Sena leader Ajay Chaudhary said, “It’s yet another attempt of land grab by the government and MTDC. MTDC has become a loss-making proposition and now they are finding ways to make quick bucks. By moving the zoo they will usurp the land and it will be ultimately sold to some builder at an astronomical price. Under no circumstance will the Shiv Sena allow this.”
To protest against the proposal of moving the zoo, Mr Chaudhary said a human chain would be formed around Rani Bagh on Monday evening. Approximately 10,000 people are likely to come together to form the chain, including school students, NGOs and animal activists. The chain will be formed along the boundary of the zoo in Byculla.
However, the BMC has opposed the suggestion of shifting the zoo, citing that the makeover plans for the Byculla zoo are already afoot. “Byculla zoo has been in existence since the last 150 years and is a matter of pride for Mumbaikars. We have objected to the suggestion of shifting the zoo put forth by the tourism committee as all the procedures and permissions to develop the zoo have been put in place,” said standing committee chairman, Rahul Shewale.
