Salim, Javed settle for `6 crore
After being embroiled in a legal dispute on the copyright of 1973 blockbuster Zanjeer, script writers Salim Khan and Javed Akthar on Wednesday arrived at a financial settlement with producers, paving way for release of the remake of the movie this Friday.
Salim and Javed had filed a suit in the Bombay high court in July claiming they had copyright over the script, story and dialogues of the blockbuster, produced by Prakash Mehra.
The duo demanded `6 crore as monetary compensation from Mehra’s kin for remaking the film. Prakash Mehra’s son Sumeet Mehra is producing the remake of Zanjeer. Salim and Javed contented they had the copyrights on the script of the original film and they had allowed Prakash Mehra to produce the film based on their script just once. Hence, a remake could not be produced without their consent.
During the hearing on Wednesday, a division bench of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and M.S. Sonak, advised the parties to amicably resolve the issue, which was agreed by them.

Resolution to amend rape law passed by legal aid body
Age correspondent
Mumbai, Sept. 4
The Honorary Legal Aid and Advice Centre, a legal aid body operating in Mumbai for the past ten years, has passed a resolution that the sentence in respect of gangrape under Section 376-D of the Indian Penal Code should be enhanced to death penalty. The body comprises Justice D.R. Dhanuka, former Bombay high court judge and several senior lawyers from the high court and Supreme Court.
The resolution was passed in the emergency meeting held on August 25 in the wake of the gang rape incident of a photojournalist at Shakti Mills compound, Mahalaxmi. The meeting was chaired by Justice Dhanuka, who himself proposed the resolution.
“The trustees and members were disturbed about the growing incidents of gangrape in the country, including the recent gangrape in Mumbai and the gangrape of a lady constable in Jharkhand. It was therefore decided to recommend to the highest authorities of the country that the law must be further amended forth,” the regulation states.
