Respect others’ rights before demanding own: Ahmad
Stressing on realising one’s duty towards the society and ensuring that one does not trample upon the rights of others in pursuit of their own rights, Dr Sayed Ahmad, the governor of Jharkhand asked students to learn to respect the rights of other human beings before demanding fulfilment of their own rights. Dr Ahmad was speaking at a felicitation ceremony held at Maharashtra College on Tuesday. Dr M.A. Khan, registrar of University of Mumbai, who was also felicitated at the ceremony, exhorted students to adhere and abide by the tenets of their respective religions as all religions taught the ideal way of living in society.
According to officials of Maharashtra College, the programme was held to encourage student achievers at the hands of
some of the most celebrated leaders and officials from the Muslim community.
While addressing the students, Dr Ahmad gave an example of a man carrying an umbrella and tilting it backwards. The umbrella touched the nose of a woman to which she objected and told him that his right of using the space ended where her nose began. Thus implying that while the man had a right to protect himself from rain or sun by using an umbrella, he had to ensure that it did not obstruct or create a nuisance for others.
Speaking on upholding the image of the Muslim community, that has been criticised for the acts
of a few anti-social elements, Dr Khan said that such people had no right to call themselves Muslims. “The Quran teaches people the way of living life in the society. One cannot call himself or herself as a Muslim merely by praying and fasting while neglecting the teachings of Quran that have elaborated on the ways in which a Muslim should live his life,” said Dr Khan.
Addressing students of the community specifically, Dr Khan added that they had no need to preach others about their religion. “Set an example by following your religion properly and then let the people decide. It is not surprising that the entire
community gets blamed for the acts of a few errant people because of the hypocritical life that is being led by most Muslims,” he said.
